The Abbey from Digby Road

In front of the abbey, between the grass and the road, there is a large and elegant Victorian memorial. It was erected in 1884 in memory of George Digby Wingfield Digby, the Abbey's greatest 19th century benefactor. At the four corners are bronze statuettes of St Aldhelm, Bishop Roger, Abbot Bradford and Sir Walter Raleigh. A bronze plaque, facing south, presents the profile of Mr Digby.
