Melbury Osmond

3 August 2008 - Melbury Osmond

My first visit to this Dorset village. Unfortunatly it was very grey and so not the best conditions for photographs. Melbury Osmond is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy’s mother. The link with Hardy extends to his writing, in “The Woodlanders” the setting of Melbury Osmond is referred to as “Little Hintock”.

Melbury Osmond Dorset Church

The village church of St Osmond. There has been a church on this site since Domesday times. However, the church was almost completely rebuilt in 1745

In the bush shelter is this map giving a bit of local history. It explains that the village is the birthplace of Thomas Hardy’s mother.
