16 August 2008 - Moreton

A visit to Clouds Hill, the home of T E Lawrence and also to the church where he is buried.

Clouds Hill T E Lawrence Home

The first view of Lawrence’s home hidden behind trees.

From this angle you can see how small it is and also the lack of windows. It was very dark inside. Of note here is the porthole window. This window is in the upstairs bedroom that was lined in Aluminum sheet to keep the damp out. The porthole came from HMS Tiger.

Above the front door is an inscription in Greek. It roughly translates as “Why worry”

Moreton Church Dorset

Moreton village church of St Nicholas. It was very damp during this visit. Hence the grey pictures!

The church was hit by a fleeing German bomber in WW2. Once rebuilt instead of replacing the stained glass windows spectacular clear glass engraved panels were used. The windows were engraved by Laurence Whistler. This has resulted in a wonderful light and magical look inside the church.

This picture only gives a feel for the wonderful light within the church. You have to see it to get the full sense of light. Below are a few more examples of the windows.

This is my favourite of the windows I photographed.
