A long shot up to Portsmouth historic dockyard. The masts of HMS Warrior are visible.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

This was a popular spot to sit and spend Sunday afternoon.

Monday morning. A couple of pictures from the car ferry. HMS Warrior.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

Not so many people sat outside the pubs on this misty damp morning!

October 2017

Our first visit to the Historic Dockyard.

April 2018

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

A return visit to the historic dockyard. This time to visit Mary Rose and HMS Victory. The above shot shows the extent of the Mary Rose hull that remains.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

This set of carpenters tools was of particular interest to me as a woodworker. I have a wooden plane that is probably about 100 years old but looks so similar to the one above dating from the 1500’s.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

In this shot you can see the video clips that were projected into the appropriate compartment on the ship depicting life on board in the 1500’s.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

One of the old canons.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

The Mary Rose was completed in 1512. She had served in the navy for 33 years before sinking.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

The museum was very busy during our visit and we did not have the time to study all the exhibits. We intend to go again soon for another look.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

Some of the cook’s personal belongings. The spoon is of particular interest to me as I have recently started carving wooden spoons and can appreciate the skill required to carve the above spoon, especially considering they did not have the modern steel carving tools that are available today.

Portsmouth Hampshire Dorsetcamera

There are three viewing levels in the museum with only the top level being open to allow viewing without glass in the way.

A model of the Mary Rose.

The old and the new. A view from the deck of HMS victory with the Spinnaker Tower and dockyard clock visible.
